Levels Of Restoration

Level 1: Concourse De' Elegance

In show judging, this vehicle is likely to win honors in it's class. It has ceased to be an automobile and has become a work of art. Extreme care is taken during transport & storage, and the vehicle is rarely driven. Level 1 is for strict original authenticity and maximum professional standards in all areas. Requiring the use of lead, hammer & ping welding, and many hours of priming and blocking, as well as original parts & equipment, the costs of restoration for these types of vehicles are considerably greater.

Things to expect:

  • This will be a frame off restoration.
  • Use of lead filler, little to no regular filler.
  • Use of all original parts. Use of NOS parts is kept to a minimum or as needed basis.
  • Priming & blocking phase will be completed up to & until the vehicle is perfect. i.e.: no waves in body & all body lines
    matched evenly.
  • Little to no machine sanding, almost all sanding will be done by hand to ensure the best quality.
  • Paint to be at original manufacturers specifications. Although more buffing and sanding may be performed to bring out a quality shine. Customer can opt for a custom paint job at their request.
  • Frame-Off restoration is to be expected.
  • All chrome, moldings and exterior pieces will be removed.
  • Extensive care will be taken in the paint prep process. Finer grits of sandpaper will be used at more intervals.
  • Expect any and all features of level 2 & 3 unless it conflicts with original specs of your vehicle.

Level 2: High Show Quality

Except for close inspection, this vehicle may appear as a Level 1. This type of vehicle will take near top honors in many judged shows, except when squared off against a Level 1. This vehicle is driven for pleasure. Some minor defects are inherent, due to the cost reducing procedures like wire feed welding, patch panels, fine tolerances of skim coat, and use of NOS parts. In all a superior restoration that does not have the preparation of a Level 1.

Things to expect:

  • Fine tolerances of standard filler (1/8 inch
    under).

  • Use of NOS or reproduction parts in place of original parts in some cases.

  • Vehicle is primed and blocked at least twice, maybe more. Use of polyester primer, then two part quality sealer, and then two part quality primer.

  • Finer grits of sandpaper used in sanding
    process.

  • Vehicle will be wet sanded before paint.

  • Moderate polishing will be performed to eliminate dirt specs and imperfections in vehicle's paint. Some imperfections may
    still be inherent.

  • Frame off restoration will be performed strictly under consent of customer and is sometimes necessary or recommended. This will raise the cost significantly.

  • Majority of blocking and sanding will be done by hand, but machine sanding will be utilized when applicable.

  • Paint will be normally of a base coat/clear coat application. Customer may change accordingly.

  • Chrome & moldings will be removed.

  • Doors, hood & deck lid will be removed.

  • Most panels will be fully skim coated for
    straightness.

  • Most body lines will be matched evenly
    if not all of them.

  • Expect any and all features of a Level 3 unless it conflicts with vehicles quality goal.

Level 3: Show N' Shine

This vehicle looks fine from 10 feet away. However, up close it shows the chrome, moldings, and the glass have not been removed and only masked off to cut the cost of body work. The finish may
show evidence of machine sanding. The fenders, doors, hood, and deck lid have not been removed as in a Level 1 and Level 2 restoration process. Expect future deterioration in the seams, moldings, and jams since they were not properly processed in our shop’s usual high quality workmanship. Rust-out conditions: metal panels will be replaced for an additional charge, and larger tolerances
of polyester skim coat are to be expected. This vehicle will not rank well in judged shows, and at Level 3, no frame-off restoration will be contemplated or should be expected. The painted finish will be of a
single stage. Base coat/clear coat finish will cost at least an additional $1500.00 plus additional priming and blocking.

Things to expect:

  • Large tolerances of polyester filler.

  • NOS parts will be used primarily if available at a cheaper cost.

  • Vehicle will be primed & blocked at least once, no more than twice.

  • Sanding and blocking will be primarily by machine. Hand sanding will be used in cases where machine use is not possible.

  • Very few panels will be completely skim coated for total straightness.

  • Expect waves in the body and body lines may not match up.

  • Paint prep will be by machine primarily.

  • No frame-off restoration will be expected or contemplated.

  • Expect limited amounts of paint defects. i.e. specs, orange peel.

  • Paint will be of a single stage application. Base coat/ clear coat or tri-coat will be at additional cost.

  • Chrome and moldings will not be removed

  • Doors, Hood & Deck lid will not be re-
    moved.

( Of course every customer can customize their project to suit their needs. Below is a list of optional features that can be added to projects at an additional cost. Most options can be used in conjunction with others while some require certain applications.)

parts invoices with time, cost & task. Statements are sent weekly to all customers.

Job Budgeting & Phasing

There are many ways in which to go about the restoration process. Some customers choose to tackle the entire job at once. Completing all aspects of their restoration at one time is probably the most difficult option to manage financially. For those who would rather spread the financial investment in their vehicle over a period of time, there is phasing. Sitting down with one of Buffalo Restorations Sales Staff and Shop Manager, a detailed and organized time line is laid out for completion of certain aspects of the restoration at different time periods. Phasing can be spread over the course of months or years, this is strictly up to the customer. All potential customers should take some time to decide which budgeting method will work best for them.
